Mallika’s real name is 'Reema Lambha'; she changed her name because there are many Reema's in the industry. Mallika graduated in Philosophy from Miranda House and has worked as a part time airhostess. She has an estranged relationship with her family, who are very religious and don't agree with Mallika working in the movies. She had to pay a heavy price to pursue her dream of becoming a Bollywood Queen – she had to divorce Jet Airways pilot Captain Karan Singh Gill. She did several ads and music videos before her film debut, including the Santro ad with Shah Rukh Khan. She had 17 kissing scenes in her debut film, ‘Khwahish’. And when she was asked to comment on it, she said:
"For God`s sake, I am a young girl. Do I look like a nun to you? If the hero can enjoy the kiss, why can't I?"
Rumour has it that Mallika will star in 'Murder 2'. She plays the snakewoman in Jennifer Lynch's 'Hissss'. Her upcoming movies are 'Love, Barack' and 'Double Dhamaal'.
Mallika's performance in 'Pyar Ke Side Effects' made audiences take notice of her as an actress with some substance, and 2007's 'Welcome' was a blockbuster success. She is currently among the top paid actresses in Bollywood. Mallika is a good friend of Princess Myasa, King Sheikh Hamad Bin Khalifa’s daughter, and she was invited for the Princess’ wedding.

Mallika was listed by UK magazine 'Eastern Eye' as one of "Asia's Sexiest Women". She was the 'brand ambassador' for the launch of 7-Up Curvy in India (2006). A special bottle was designed in homage to Mallika's "curves". She accepted membership in the Advisory Board of the Asian Academy of film and television supporting film education in India.
Mallika Sherawat is the first Indian woman to be offered to pose nude for Playboy magazine. Mallika, however, refused the offer "on moral grounds".
TIME magazine once reported:"Bollywood bombshell Mallika Sherawat, whose warm smile and tight dresses restored Cannes's rep as a showcase for steamy glamour..."
Mallika Sherawat's performance at the televised 2006 New Year's Eve show at the hotel J.W. Marriot, in Mumbai, caused social activist Vinod Jain to urge police to take immediate action against the actress for wearing "suggestive clothing". Mallika's nickname in the press is "Bollywood's Kissing Queen."
